The first ever “Sildenafil Pill” is out in the U. S., and the drug is going off-patent in many generic formulations. This week, the Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizer’s (FDA) Viagra (sildenafil citrate) and Eli Lilly’s (Eli Lilly) Cialis (tadalafil).
Pfizer and Eli Lilly both are based in Indianapolis, and the FDA says the combination of Viagra and Cialis is safe and effective. But, the agency says it’s not just about the drugs.
“It’s about the drug itself,” said Jim Sage, a professor of medicine and pharmacy at Indiana University. “It’s about how it interacts with your body.”
The FDA recently added a new section to its warning about possible side effects of the drug. The section says: “Sexual dysfunction” is not a new problem in the U. S. but may have implications for men who use it. “Sexual dysfunction is common among men who use drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra,” said FDA spokesperson Lyndsay M. Carter. “Men who have sexual dysfunction should speak with their doctor about their medical history and any current medications.”
Some men use Cialis as a last resort, so the FDA says it should be used only after a thorough medical evaluation.
The FDA said that men who use drugs to treat erectile dysfunction should discuss any past medical problems, current medications, or allergies. “The health of the male patient will be the primary factor in determining the appropriateness of the drug,” FDA said. “Other factors, such as the patient’s age and medical history, may also play a role.”
Cialis is a generic version of Viagra. Pfizer, the maker of Cialis, is trying to get back onto the market. The drugmaker says it plans to produce and sell a generic version of Cialis.
“This is an important drug to develop,” said Erik Gordon, a health care strategist at large law firm Hanly. “This is not just about Viagra. It’s about Cialis.”
Viagra, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, is available as a generic.
The FDA also is warning that a man should avoid taking the drug if he is taking nitrate-based drugs such as nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Pentgon, etc.) or other medications for chest pain or heart problems. People with a history of heart attack or stroke should not take Viagra.
Viagra has also been linked to a dangerous fall in blood pressure, leading some doctors to prescribe it off-label. A study in 2012 found that users of Viagra overprescribed by about 16 million men in the United States. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that those who took the drug had a five-fold increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart-related events compared with men who took nitrates.

Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilover the counterwithout a prescription.
The application is forsildenafil 50mg onlyin a maximum pack size of 8 tablets. Sildenafil tablets are available on prescription in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg in pack sizes of four and eight tablets.
The move follows the in 2013. After the patent expired other pharmaceutical companies, apart from Pfizer, have been permitted to supply their own sildenafil tablets, sometimes known as generic Viagra.
